Interviews almost certainly begin in a fairly relaxed fashion, by introductions and light conversation (your journey, the weather etc) this is your first opportunity to make a good impression. Most interviews follow a similar format. Firstly by asking questions in regard to your C.V. and general questions about you

  • How much do you know about this job?
  • What appeals to you about this position?
  • What skills or experiences can you bring to this company?
  • What is your opinion of our company?
  • How would you describe yourself?
  • How would your superiors describe you?
  • Do you prefer to work as an individual or as part of a team?
  • How do you cope with pressure?
  • Tell me how you have overcome a difficult situation?
  • What do you think is a bad/good characteristic in an individual in the workplace?
  • What has been your biggest achievement to date?
  • What are your aspirations in the short term? Long term?
  • What motivates you?
  • One strength about yourself you have to offer a prospective employer?
  • One weakness about yourself as perceived by friends or colleagues?
  • Tell me about your hobbies and interests?
  • Are you interested in the position?
  • Are you considering other jobs?
  • Why do you think you should be offered this position?

Handling tough questions with confidence is in fact an opportunity to promote the exact message you are wishing to give about yourself. Employers will deliberately design a situation to see how you behave and react. Do not allow yourself to be antagonised by an interviewer at any time, remain calm and level headed. Giving a positive, fluent answer as difficult as it may seem (no sarcasm) by anticipating general questions.
